Subject :Update on trip from Costa Rica to Vancouver (from Ken Williams)

Greetings all.

It has been a while since anything has been sent out on the “Pacific crossing” mailing list. And, actually, most effort lately has not had anything to do with the Pacific crossing. My current plan is still to cross to Hawaii in Spring 2009, although that still seems very far away.

I have been checking slip availability in Hawaii, and was told that for a boat our size, our only option is the Ko Olina marina in Honolulu http://www.koolina.com/marina.html . I checked on slip availability, and they don’t take reservations, but have slips available now, and seem happy to start billing anytime I want. I have been given feedback that it is an easy marina to get into, and this won’t be a problem. My gut reaction is to start paying some number of months in advance to make sure I get in, even though I’ve been told this won’t be needed.

Short-term, my focus has been on our cruising this winter. Our plan is to do the Fubar (San Diego -> La Paz Mexico) rally, and then continue south to Costa Rica, arriving there in March. I contacted Los Suenos, and they have a fishing tournament then, and aren’t sure we’ll get in. I’m going to keep pushing on them, but there’s a new marina someone told me about that I’m also going to research (I’ve forgotten the name, and hope I can figure it out).

Several other boats will be meeting up with us in Costa Rica, for transport north, in Spring 08, to the Pacific NW. There has been a lot of communication about how to do this. No one likes the idea of the long uphill slog along the west coast. The bad news is that Dockwise has decided not to do any west coast runs in 2008, and the worse news is that the only other real option (short of running the boat north on its own bottom)  is Yacht Path, who has a mixed reputation. My current plan is to take a chance on Yacht Path. They have boats going north in both March and April. Hopefully this won’t be a problem.

Below is the latest cruising schedule I have for everyone on this list. If you see anything you’d like changed, let me know and I’ll publish a new list.

PS There are about 40 people on this mailing list. To send to the list, you can send an email to: pacific@talkspot.com Keep in mind that most of us are on boats with limited bandwidth. Don’t send attachments, or pictures in your email. And.. if you have such limited bandwidth, that you don’t want to receive these mails while you are cruising, email me (Ken Williams kenw @ seanet.com) offline and I’ll temporarily take you off the list until you want the emails started again.
